The Carter Family was a country music group formed in 1927. The family consisted of Alvin Pleasant “A.P.” Delaney Carter, his wife Sara Dougherty Carter and their children June Carter and Johnny Messner (born John Herndon).
The Carters were pioneers of the newly invented genre of Country Western music. A.P., or ‘Uncle A’ as he was known to the family, had begun performing with his sons by 1926 in Georgia when they renamed themselves the Original Southern Quartette for better bookings at radio stations that barred them from playing because they were African-American.
This would be short-lived though since one year later, on October 15th 1927 – after hearing some recordings played over an airwave broadcast.
