One of the most popular topics to discuss nowadays is Herbs, some good, some bad. The thing that gets me is that they’re both rather difficult to research and debate. Just because you’re not a doctor doesn’t mean you shouldn’t know what herb is safe or what herb from stan david botanicals is dangerous. There are a lot of people who will try to tell you one thing but there are other people who will tell you something different, and it’s hard for them for each person in the debate to be heard by everyone else.

That’s why I’ve put together this list of pros and cons on how herbs can help your body and how they’ll also hurt it as well.

Pros of Herbs are:

1. Increase Body Strength and Fitness

Herbs are great for those who want to build lean muscles and lose fat without having to go on a strict diet. In the early 20th century, many people were using herbs for bodybuilding as it was thought that it was better for your muscles if you used them during training rather than after. It is thought that because of all the caffeine found in many of the herbs, they can help you push away drowsiness and fatigue.

2. Allergies Relief

Herbs can be great to use when you have allergies or feel an itchy throat. Like coffee, they also contain caffeine, so it’s not just a decaf coffee when you drink your tea or herbs as well.

3. Relieve Pain and Inflammation

Many people believe that many of these herbs can help relieve pain and inflammation in the body as well. Some of the best herbs to use are chamomile, echinacea, lavender, peppermint and St John’s Wort (a common herb in many various drinks such as tea).

4. Beat Depression

It has been shown that many of the common depression growing plants can be very useful for people dealing with depression. Some examples are passionflower, valerian and kava kava.

5. Boost Immunity

Many of us are always looking for a boost in our immune system and herbs can help with that. Some of the best herbs to use are echinacea, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, milk thistle and others.

6. Mental Focus

I have found that quite a few of the herbs out there today help me with my mental focus when I’m feeling stressed. These include: ashwagandha, baobab, camomile and lavender.

7. Relieve Varicose Veins

If you have varicose veins, you can get relief from your pain and discomfort with these herbs: bilberries, dandelion, horse chestnut and yarrow.

Cons of Herbs are:

1. Heartburn and Upset Stomachs

Many people who use herbs to help with a stomach problem (for example gas, bloating or indigestion) will often find that they can flare up uncomfortable side effects such as heartburn or an upset stomach because of the tannins in the plants. This is a big problem for many people when it comes to using plants as medicine.

2. Throat and Lung Problems

One of the biggest issues people have when using herbs is the issue with breathing. If you have problems breathing when you use certain herbs, this can be a huge problem as it could lead to your death if it gets deadly. Some of these herbs include: blue cohosh, comfrey, ephedra (which is banned), germander, lady’s mantle, pleurisy root and snakeroot.

3. Liver or Kidney Failure

Many people who use plants as medicine experience liver damage or kidney failure because they didn’t do their research on what that plant was capable of doing to their body. Remember, just because it’s natural, it doesn’t mean that it’s healthy.

4. Shock (or Death)

If you are allergic to these herbs and take them for medicine, you’re likely to experience shock or even die from the reaction. Some of these plants include: alder buckthorn, black cohosh, comfrey, dogbane, germander and locoweed.

5. Nausea and Vomiting

Many people who have been known to experience nausea or vomiting because of the herbs they use, especially if they get certain types of cancer treatments. Sometimes this can be so bad that they might lose their appetite altogether or even their will to want to try other treatments.

6. Irregular Heartbeat

Many people who have used herbs for a long period of time will find that their heart will start to beat irregularly or experience palpitations from the use of these plants.

7. Liver Problems

As I said, I believe it can be dangerous if you use the wrong plant at the wrong time, but you can also get liver problems if you use too much of certain plants. Some of these include: artemisia, coltsfoot, germander and gentian root (the latter is also an emetic).


To conclude, you have to remember that herbs are important for you to know about if you’re interested in natural medicine. While they do have their pros and cons, I think that you should be aware of what is bad and what is good for your body. There are many reasons to choose herbs over anything else, one of the biggest being that they are all natural and don’t harm your body in any way. While some people believe they may not work as well as prescription drugs, almost anything could work better than a drug and cause less harm to your body.

This is why I’m interested in herbs because they don’t seem to hurt me or anyone else who uses them for the right purpose.
