As we enter the information age, a fundamental challenge is the increased quantity of digital media in which we must select from among an overwhelming number of choices if we are to keep up with events both in the world and within our personal lives. In the absence of clear and consistent guidelines, those who would prefer less information will inevitably be overwhelmed with too much.
The mental health consequences of cacophony are a topic worthy of further discussion, but this article is about the technological challenges that come with it. This phenomenon is not unique to the Information Age; it was also an issue for King Solomon in his day. They change so quickly that we need to keep up with them, and they pull us in, constantly demanding our time and attention.
What should we do?
The article says that there are many things we can do to improve our mental health. One of the best changes would be getting rid of some of these devices. This is very difficult for people who are constantly busy, and have trouble keeping up with all their devices. If people could just turn off the technology that they don’t need at the moment, like cell phones or televisions, it would be a huge improvement for mental wellness.
What is the solution?
The article mentions that new devices are coming out, but there are some things you can do today to improve your mental wellness. You have to figure out what works best for you. There is no one way that works for everyone. As one of the researchers says, “There is no right way to be yourself.”
The article points out that sometimes just a little bit of mindfulness is enough to change our thinking and make us happier people. It also mentions how meditation changes our brain chemistry in a positive way.
